Antique New England Intaglio

This paperweight was made by the New England Glass Company in the late 19th century. The paperweight contains the sunken or intaglio image of the brothers, Abbott and Amos Lawrence. According to John Hawley, in his book on the Boston and Sandwich and New England Glass Companies, the Lawrence brothers promoted the New England textile industry and owned a Boston based, importing company. Abbott Lawrence also served two terms in Congress during the period of 1835 – 1840 and later helped to found Lawrence, Massachusetts a textile town near the New Hampshire state line. The paperweight does have minor wear on the base and light scratching on both the front and back. The corners are beveled and two of the corners are showing some roughness. Overall, this weight is in very good condition.
